Rants

Well, we have a "Raves" page, so a "Rants" page seemed to be in order. Calling this section "essays" seemed to be a bit pretentious for our tastes. What follows is a collection of rants and raves, inspired by participation in various e-mail lists and discussions with our customers.

Our desire is that through this extemporaneous discussion, you can get to know us a bit better - how we approach audio problems and where our musical priorities are.

Our goal is to stimulate thought and dialog and not to dictate it. With that caveat ...

  • Sticky Topic Since we started hosting our forum in late 2007, it has become the repository for rants as well as a host of useful (we hope) information. You can always link to it from the top menu selection on this page and our home page. We'll update the menus on all of our other pages soon.

  • Sticky Topic High-End Audio by Arthur Salvatore

This is another "sticky topic" that should stay at the top of the Rants Page. When I first visited Arthur's site, I didn't quite know what to make of it. Much of what Arthur said echoed my observations during my long journey through this minefield we call "high-end audio".

Arthur has a matter of fact writing style that pulls no punches. Many consider it to be abrasive. Arthur raises quite a few valid points in his arguments, but I was initially put off by his writing - not knowing what his real agenda was.

We all know that the essence of a good "con" is to mix credible statements in with your argument. The price of our audio education has been funded by difficult and expensive lessons, and my antennas were up.

As I read more (and could scarcely find anything to disagree with), I concluded that Arthur speaks to us with sincerity. One section which has garnered particular notoriety is section entitled Reviewing the Reviewers.

  • Sticky Topic Here's a link to John Atwood's blog. John covers quite a few things about audio, music and technology - always in a thought provking way

  • August, 2006:  From John Broski's excellent technical site TubeCAD Journal comes this rant on Missing Sonic Controls. John's technical thinking is provocative, and in this rant he turned his attention away from vacuum tube design and toward audio foolery.

  • June, 2006:   Audio Language, Secret Handshakes, and Gizmology.

  • May, 2006:   Observations on Auditioning. Some observations about personality types by both yours truly and Ralph Bagge.

  • April, 2006:   On the Stereophile Class-B Rating. Every October and April, we receive a of questions about this rating. On this page, we expand on our official Manufacturer's response - where we were limited to 750 words by the magazine.

  • April, 2006:   On the Subtleties of Turntable Setup - Part-1.

  • December, 2005:  From a post on speed stability and the turntable upgrade hierarchy.

  • November, 2005:  A rant from Lynn Olson's Soul of Sound Library entitled: Illusion Engines.

  • July, 2005:  An unedited rant from one of our customers - on keeping your audio sanity.

  • November, 2004:  On the Schroeder Tonearm, Drive Belts, and the Effect of Treble on Bass Quality.

  • November, 2004:  Manufacturer's Response to the Listening Column from the October, 2004 issue of Stereophile

We will shortly include unpublished commentary about this review. Stereophile limits manufacturers to 750 word responses, and this barely allowed us to scratch the surface in our published comment.

Be certain to read Arthur Salvatore's comments about reviews (above) in concert with this commentary. This will further put our comments in context.

  • November, 2004:  Evaluating audio gear - you shouldn't have to get used to it.

  • March, 2004:  Notes from the underground - the upgrade hierarchy.
