Unpacking and Assembling the Schroeder Reference
Tools required:
- Large Tweezers
- 1.5mm Allen Key (provided with arm)
Unpacking:
Your arm has been shipped with protective tape on both of the magnets.
Leave the tape on the magnets for this step. If you have removed the tape, re-apply it, or cut two small pieces
of masking tape and apply them to the face of each magnet to protect them from scratching.
Carefully lay out the major components on your work area, paying attention to not strain the arm wires
in any way. The strain-relief on the Reference is effected only when the arm is mounted to the turntable.
Overview:
This task involves threading the damping adjustment screw into the bearing tower.
Look at the first photo on the left, and observe the components of the bearing assembly:
- The bearing tower
- The knurled brass bushing - used for both damping adjustment and anti-skate setting
- The arm wand - with attached aramid fiber thread and set screw.
In the second photo, we've re-inserted the knurled brass bushing/thumb-wheel into the bearing tower.
This bushing has a hole in the middle which is tapped to accept the set screw attached to the tonearm.
Assembly:
You will be threading this set screw into the hole in the brass bushing from the bottom - the side
closest to the arm wand. While it's somewhat counterintuitive, the following simplify steps the task.
- Place the arm wand in the bearing tower assembly so that the two magnets lock in place.
- Use the tweezers to locate the set screw in the threaded bushing hole.
- Insert the 1.5mm Allen key into the brass bushing from the top side of the bearing tower.
- While holding the set screw with the tweezers, turn the Allen screw counter-clockwise in order to catch the thread
in the threaded bushing hole.
- After catching the thread (about 1/2 turn), you no longer need to hold the set screw with the tweezers.
- Hold the brass thumbwheel between thumb and forefinger while continuing to turn the Allen screw counter-
clockwise.
- Continue to turn the set screw. You will get to a point where the slack is removed from the string and you
begin to put the string under tension. Keep turning the screw until you see a space appear between the
magnets - about the thickness of a business card.
- Remove the protective tape from each magnet surface.
- Holding the brass thumbwheel, turn the Allen screw clock-wise to reduce the spacing between the magnets.
You want the magnets to contact each other for now - locking them in place until after you have mounted
the tonearm to your turntable. You will adjust the magnet spacing after the tonearm is mounted.
You are now ready to install the arm onto the armboard.
