Motor Controller Update

Postby galibier_numero_un on Sat Feb 04, 2012 12:00 pm

I'm starting this thread to track progress on our motor controller design.

In the past few months, one thing that has become readily apparent - that the standard production AC motors are not up to the standards we're holding them to for the Stelvio-II class of turntable.

The best solution lies in one of two options:

  • designing and manufacturing our own motors
  • Sourcing motors through one of several suppliers to the US Military
As we start testing samples of existing designs, we'll know more.

Once we release the Stelvio-II design, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Serac-II and Gavia-II designs, and this will inform us of the final pricing for these models.

It's clear that the Stelvio-II solution will be cost prohibitive for both the Serac-II, and the Gavia-II, but knowledge gained from the Stelvio-II controller will inform the designs of the Stelvio-II's baby brother and sister.

If someone held a gun to my head (and knowing the targeted price-point of the Serac-II and Gavia-II), my sense is that the Serac-II will likely carry our generation-II, DC controller, and the Gavia-II will have a "junior" version of the Stelvio-II AC controller.

At this point, it's all prognostication, but I want to post my evolving thoughts on this topic.

In the months leading up to realization of these designs, I'll post a link to this thread on the Galibier News Page (http://www.galibierdesign.com/news.html), so you can quickly hot-link to this thread for updates.

We're in the deep design phase at the moment, so any posts made in February and March won't have any thoughts based on physical testing.

Of course, consistent with the Galibier creedo, all of this development will be available to the installed base of Galibier users.

Stay tuned ...

Cheers,
Thom
