Part 2 - Bearing and Platter Installation:

Installing the Bearing Spindle

Parts and materials for this step:
  • Turntable base (brass bearing body installed and thrust plate inserted)
  • Stainless bearing spindle (thrust ball installed)
  • Oil
  • Paper towels
  • Isopropyl alcohol
Notes:
  • The black, Delrin thrust plate is already installed into the bearing body. Your 'table has been run-in for about 10 hours, so the thrust plate has begun to break in. You'll note the beginning of a small dimple wearing in at the center of the thrust surface.

  • Because of the close tolerances in the bearing, both the stainless bearing spindle and the top journal of the brass bearing housing are assembled dry - with no lubricant on their surfaces.

This allows trapped air to escape as the spindle seats into the bearing housing. With normal care, there is no danger of scoring or galling the surfaces.
Installation and filling with oil:
  • Set the turntable base on a convenient work area. Your turntable stand is fine for this purpose from this point onward.

  • Remove the plastic stretch-wrap covering from the bearing body.

  • Add oil to the bearing. You will note a ledge about .100" wide (2.5mm) inside the bearing housing. This is 1.750" (45mm) from the top of the bearing.

Add oil so that the oil just barely covers this ledge.

  • Moisten a paper towel with alcohol and wipe dry:

    1. The top journal in the brass bearing housing. This is the surface which begins at the top of the bearing, extending down for .750" (19mm)

    2. The stainless bearing spindle

  • Insert the bearing spindle.

It will meet with resistance as it contacts the oil. Moderate downward pressure (30-50 Lbs. force) will allow it to seat about 50% of the way down.

If you're ambitious or have strong hands, you can work to seat the bearing further before installing the platter.

The thin oil we specify, in addition to providing superior dynamics in the music than thick oil does, allows for easy seating of the bearing.

When fully seated, the clearance between the top of the brass body and the bottom of the wide, stainless bearing flange is .125" (about 3mm).

  • Any remaining seating of the bearing will be performed with the platter in place (see below)

Installing the Platter & Seating the Bearing

  • Fit the platter onto the record spindle
Note:

If the clearance between the bottom of the platter and the top of the turntable base is much more than 3/32" (about 2.4 mm) then final seating of the bearing must be performed.

This can be done by either:
  • Pressing evenly on the platter (use the palms of both hands) 180 degrees apart.

  • Spinning the platter - either manually or after fitting the belt and motor controller (next step).
